- SMTP is a set of commands that authenticates and direct the transfer of electronic mail
- An email client (e.g. Outlook) uses SMTP to send a message to the mail server, where the message has an source address, a recipient address and a body
- the mail server uses SMTP to send that message to the correct receiving mail server via reading the recipient address
- a feature that may be used in the future is DSN (Delivery Status Notification)
