Glossary
- network topologies: the physical layout of a network (network map)
- Hub: central node that is connected to all other nodes on a star network. It transmits data to all the nodes in the network
- workstation: a desktop computer terminal
- servers: a computer that provides a service to other nodes in a network
- LAN (local area network): a computer network that is located in a limited area (confined network in a room or building). it does not utilise external ldata links such as public telephone system.
- terminator: is added at both ends of the bus network to stop old messages from echoing, this occurs when signals travelling down the wire is reflected from the end point
- backbone: carries the heavy data traffic between the central nodes of the network
- gateway: can be considered as a “translator” for data passing between networks using different protocols e.g data passing from ethernet to token ring
- parameters: any value passed to a program by the user or by another program in order to customise the program for a particular purpose. A parameter may be a file name, a coordinate, a range of values, a money amount or a code.
