Hybrid topology
a network that has a combination of star, bus, ring or wireless into 1 network
It is used when 2 networks are connected into 1 to share, communicate data and hardware/ software resources
all hybrid network topologies have 1 transmission path between any 2 nodes
if 2 networks work on the same protocol (both are either Ethernet or token ring) then a
bridge
is used to connect the 2 networks
if 2 networks work on different protocols (1 uses Ethernet and the other token ring) then a
gateway
is used to connect the 2 networks
a bus topology is commonly used to form the
backbone
of the 2 networks
